As a symbol of the Navy, the Cross of Christ became known due to being the ex-libris of NRP Sagres. It is the symbol of the ancient Military Order of Christ, whose “regent and governor" was Prince Henry (1394-1460) from 1420 on.

The Prince was nominated so as to enhance his political and religious influence, as well as his wealth, in order to reinforce the fight against the Moors and to contribute to the exploration trips promoted by him. According to Legends of India by historian Gaspar Correia (1495-1561), Álvares Cabral's ships were probably the first to have exhibited this symbol in their sails.
