The NRP D. Francisco de Almeida is the second ship of the Bartolomeu Dias class. It was built at the Royal Koninklijen Marine shipyards, having been the seventh ship of the Karel Doorman class at the service of the Dutch Navy. It was commissioned on January 15th, 2010.
Coat of ArmsThe ship’s coat of arms is based on the coat of arms registered in the King of Arms for the Almeida family. Gules, double cross Or accompanied by six bezants Or and respective embroilments. Coronet Or lined in Gules. Banderole Argent in a waving pattern, and the Motto “NRP D. Francisco de Almeida” in dark capital letters and elzevir font.
PatronD. Francisco de Almeida was born in Lisbon, in 1450, and was appointed by D.Manuel as the first Viceroy of India. With a fleet of 22 ships, he defeated an enemy fleet close to Diu, on February 2nd 1509, establishing the Portuguese naval power in the Indian Ocean. He passed away on March 1st, 1510, in a battle close to the Cabo da Boa Esperança.

​​​MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT​

The NRP D. Francisco de Almeida has taken part in countless international and national missions and exercises. From those, we can highlight the aerial and naval security during the celebration of the Mass by Pope Bento XVI at Terreiro do Paço, in 2010, and also the Operation Open Shield, in 2011, as part of the NATO naval force, taking part in piracy control actions in the region of Somalia. Its role as flagship in the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 in 2015, and the Operation Sea Guardian in 2017, while being part of the NATO naval force and the operation Themis in cooperation with the FRONTEX agency are also noteworthy.​​​
