Pedro Álvares Cabral, discoverer of Brazil, was born in Belmonte, between 1460 and 1470. In 1500, after the return of Vasco da Gama, he was appointed by King D.Manuel I to command 13 carracks, to carry out a diplomatic mission in the Orient. On April 22nd, 1500, his fleet anchors close to the mouth of the present day river Cahy, in Brazil. In 1502, the King intended to send him to the Orient commanding a new fleet, but Pedro Álvares Cabral refused the mission, preferring to retire to the tranquility of his properties in Santarém, where he passed away that same year.
