BARTOLOMEU DIAS CLASS

The NRP Bartolomeu Dias (former HNLMS Van Nes) was launched on May 16th, 1922, after construction at the Schelde Group shipyards (Netherlands). It was commissioned on January 16th, 2009, as the first ship of the Bartolomeu Dias Class.

Sable, three patterns Or, each one overpassed by a cross of the same metal. Bordure wavy Azure-Argent, with eight Christ crosses Gules.
Coronet Or lined in Gules. Banderole wavy Argent and the Motto “NRP Bartolomeu Dias” in dark capital letters and elzevir font.

Patron

Bartolomeu Dias is one of the navigators connected to the most significant moments of the History of the Discoveries. The event that immortalized his name was to sail around Cabo das Tormentas, later renamed Cabo da Boa Esperança by D.João II,

​​​​​MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT​

NRP Bartolomeu Dias has as its primary mission anti-submarine warfare but can also be employed in combatant and non-combatant missions, being noteworthy the participation on EUROMARFOR, Operation Manatee and NATO Operation Sea Guardian. ​​
