VASCO DA GAMA CLASS

The NRP Corte-Real was built in 1991, at the HDW shipyards (Kiel, Germany), being the third ship of the Vasco da Gama Class. It was commissioned on November 22nd, 1991.

Coat of Arms

The ship’s coat of arms is based on the coat of arms registered in the King of Arms for the Corte-Real family. Shield Gules with six ribs firmed on the flanks, Argent. Chief Argent with a cross Gules, loose at the sides. Coronet Or lined in Gules. Banderole wavy Argent and the Motto “NRP Corte-Real” in dark capital letters and elzevir font.

Patron

Corte-Real, the name of a distinguished family of sailors from the 15th and 16th centuries, associated with the discovering of Newfoundland, around 1462, by João Vaz Corte-Real, Portuguese navigator who also organized other journeys that took him to the coast of North America, exploring the riverbanks of the Hudson and San Lorenzo rivers, up to Canada and Labrador Peninsula.

​​​​​​MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT​

The NRP Corte-Real was commissioned on November 22nd, 1991, in a ceremony in which its godmother was Sra. Dra. Maria dos Anjos Nogueira, wife of the then Minister for National Defense, Dr. Fernando Nogueira.

The ship set sail from Kiel in late January, 1992, to dock for the first time in Portuguese territory on February 1st, 1992, in the Port of Praia da Vitória in Terceira Island, Azores.

The NRP Corte-Real is an Oceanic Escort Frigate, characterized for being a medium size and weight platform, being significantly multifunctional in command, control and communications systems, weapons and sensors with great versatility and a good self-sustainability, whose combatant potential is completed when it is integrated in naval forces. 

Up until now, the Corte-Real Frigate has completed about 32,250 navigation hours, which could be described as 4 continuous years at sea, having covered 430,374 nautical miles, the equivalent to 20 times around the world.​​​
