VASCO DA GAMA CLASS

The NRP Vasco da Gama was built in 1990 at the Blohm & Voss shipyards (Hamburg, Germany) being the first of three ships from the “Vasco da Gama” class. Since its commissioning on January 18th, 1991, it has represented Portugal and its national interests in various scenarios, namely in Angola, the Adriatic Sea, Guinea-Bissau, East Timor, the Mediterranean Sea and the coast of Somalia.

Escudo enxaquetado de ouro e vermelho, de três peças em faixa e cinco em pala, as de vermelho, carregadas de dois filetes de prata postos em faixa. Em ponto de honra um escudete de prata, com cinco escudetes de azul dispostos em cruz, cada um carregado de cinco besantes de prata postos em aspa. Coronel naval de ouro forrado de vermelho. Sotoposto listel de prata ondulado, com a legenda a letras negras, maiúsculas de tipo elzevir, NRP VASCO DA GAMA.

Patron

Vasco da Gama was chosen by D.João II to lead the expedition that was preparing to explore the maritime way to India. Born in Sines, around 1469, descendant of a noble family, Vasco da Gama had shown interest in the sea from a young age, always handling himself well in the various expeditions in which he participated, exploring the African coast. In 1524, he is nominated Viceroy of India by D.João III, where he arrives in September to fight against the existing abuses which compromised the Portuguese presence in that region.

​​​​​​​MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT

This ship is based on the MEKO 200 project by Blohm  & Voss, also adopted by Australia, New Zealand, Turkey and Greece. The Portuguese variant is known as MEKO 200PN. One of the main advantages of this project is its modular construction which allows for different equipment in frigates of different countries, and also facilitates future upgrades. Since its commissioning, it has represented Portugal and its national interests in various scenarios, namely in Angola, the Adriatic Sea, Guinea-Bissau, East Timor, the Mediterranean Sea and the coast of Somalia. ​
