NRP Argos
ARGOS CLASS

NRP Argos is the first of three ships made out of fiberglass at the Arsenal do Alfeite shipyard, which along with two others, built by CONAFI – Construção Naval de Fibras, Lda, sited in Vila Real de Santo António, constitute the Argos class. The five fast patrol boats were christened with names of constellations, namely Argos,Dragão, Escorpião, Cassiopeia and Hidra. The NRP Argos was commissioned on July 1st, 1991.
HERALDIC PENNANTPennant striped in 4 pieces Or-Gules, with the first stripe charging three peacock feathers of its color, tied at the base by a silk cord Gules. Overlaid to the partitions of the stripes, a banderole Argent threaded Gules over Or with the motto “NRP ARGOS” in dark capital letters, elzevir font.
PATRONArgos is the name of a constellation. In Greek mythology, Argos was a hundred-eyed monster who blindly obeyed all commands from Hera, eliminating all of those chosen by her. The myth of Argos represents the faithful servants, who promptly fulfilled orders, assuming all responsibility for their actions.

​​​​​​​​​​​​MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT

This fast patrol boat performs safety and state authority missions in waters under national jurisdiction, in the continental coastal zone and in the Madeira archipelago.

Within the vast scope of its assignments, the search and rescue, patrol and inspection of maritime areas, suppression of unlawful activity in cooperation with other State agents, and in support of anti-pollution at sea operations are noteworthy.

At times, it participates in national naval exercises, and carries out force protection missions by escorting combatant vessels during their transit in restricted waters; it cooperates also in the training of other naval units.
