NRP Centauro
CENTAURO CLASS

The fast patrol boat NRP Centauro, which the class was named after, was commissioned on March 21st, 2000, with the remaining ships of the class being commissioned one year later. The NRP Centauro counts various missions in the Central and Southern Continental coastal areas, and was the first in this class of ships, to perform a mission in the Madeira Maritime Area.
HERALDIC PENNANTGules with three stripes Argent. It has the motto “NRP ESCORPIÃO” in dark capital letters, elzevir font. The opposite side charges a centaur Or, enhanced in Sable.


PATRONCentauro (Centaur) is the name of a constellation of the southern hemisphere. In Greek mythology, the Centaurs were creatures with the upper body of a human and the lower body and legs of a horse. They lived in the Thessaly Mountains and symbolized the brute, mindless, and blind force, and also the spirit of kindness.

​​​​​​MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT

The fast patrol boat performs missions, within the scope of security and State authority in the maritime areas under national jurisdiction. The vast number of assigned missions, the search and rescue, patrol and inspection of maritime areas, support of anti-pollution at sea, and operations suppression of unlawful activity (such as drug trafficking and illegal immigration) stand out

Punctually it takes part in national naval exercises, and performs force protection missions by escorting warships during transit in confined waters; it also cooperates in the training of other naval units.​​
