NRP Dragão

The fast patrol boat NRP Dragão is the second of a class of five vessels of Argos class. Launched on July 26th, 1991, it was delivered on October 18th, 1991. It was designed and built at the Arsenal do Alfeite shipyard, with the hull being built at the CONAFI shipyard, in Vila Real Santo António.

PATRONDragão (Dragon) is the name of a constellation. In Greek mythology, the Dragão is referred to the Golden Apples of Hesperides and the eleventh labor of Hercules. The eleventh labor of Hercules was to steal the apples from the apple tree which Gaia (Mother Earth) had given to Hera (Queen of heaven) in her marriage to Zeus. Hera chose Ladon, a hundred-head monstrous dragon, to safeguard her valuable tree.

​​MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT

This fast patrol boat performs safety and state authority missions in waters under national jurisdiction, in the continental coastal zone and in the Madeira archipelago.

Within the vast scope of its assignments, the search and rescue, patrol and inspection of maritime areas, suppression of unlawful activity in cooperation with other State agents, and in support of anti-pollution at sea operations are noteworthy.

At times, it takes part in national naval exercises, as well as exercises with warships from foreign navies, during their transit in national waters.

In regard to training, it preforms training courses for the Guarda Nacional Republicana military, within the scope of the preparation for serving aboard the fast patrol boat in the service of the Guarda Nacional Republicana.
