MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT

The fast patrol boat Escorpião was the last to be delivered of a series of 3, made out of fiberglass in Arsenal do Alfeite shipyard, which along with the two others, were built by CONAFI – Construção Naval de Fibras, Lda, sited in Vila Real de Santo António, and made the Argos Class.

Of the vast scope of missions under the Navy’s purview in peace time, the public interests are undoubtedly the ones that assume a prominent position in the operational application of this class of ships.

Within the missions under the purview of State authority, and security in the maritime areas under national jurisdiction, the fisheries inspection, search and rescue, maritime traffic separation schemes monitoring, and control of the anti-pollution at sea operations stand out.

The maritime traffic separation schemes monitoring of the coast of S.Vicente, Roca and Ilhas Berlengas, aim to control the maritime navigational movements and avoid the aggression to the marine environment by oil spills, as the consequence of maritime accidents, as well as the result of deliberated illegal actions.
