NRP Hidra

The fast patrol boat NRP Hidra is the fifth of a series of Argos class ships. Launched on July 26th, 1991 it was and commissioned on December 16th, 1991.It was designed by the Arsenal do Alfeite shipyard and built at the “CONAFI – Construção Naval de Fibras, Lda” shipyard.
HERALDIC PENNANTStriped pennant with 4 pieces Azure-Argent, with the first stripe charging a hydra Gules enhanced in Sable. Overlaying to the partitions of the stripes, a banderole Or and threaded Azure-Argent with the motto “NRP HIDRA”, in dark capital letters, elzevir font.

PATRONHidra (Hydra) is the name of a constellation. In Hellenic mythology, Hidra was a terrible monster with the body of a dragon and seven serpentine heads. Hidra was terrifying, since for each head cut off, two others were born. She lived in a swamp near the lake Lerna, in ancient Greece.

​MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT

This fast patrol boat performs safety and state authority missions, within national jurisdiction waters, in the continental coastal zone and the Madeira archipelago.

Within the vast scope of its assignments, the search and rescue, patrol and inspection of maritime areas, support of anti-pollution at sea, and operations suppression of unlawful activity (such as drug trafficking and illegal immigration) in a narrow cooperation with other State agents are noteworthy.

Punctually, it takes part in national naval exercises, and performs force protection missions by escorting warships during transit in confined waters; it also cooperates in the training of other naval units.
