NRP Orion

CENTAURO CLASS

The NRP Orion was commissioned on March 27th, 2001, in a ceremony at the Arsenal do Alfeite shipyard. This ceremony coincided with the commissioning of NRP Pégaso and NRP Sagitário. The NRP Orion is the second of four fast patrol boats of the Centauro Class, designed and built at Arsenal do Alfeite shipyard.

HERALDIC PENNANT

Vert striped Argent, with the motto “NRP ORION” in dark capital letters, elzevir font. One of the sides charges the mythological figure that overlaps the Orion constellation in Argent and enhanced in Sable.

PATRON

Orion is the name of a constellation. In Greek mythology, Orion was a giant, son of Poseidon and a mortal woman, a skilled hunter in the service of Artémis, and in love with Mérope.
Furious with the relationship, Mérope’s father, helped by Dionísio, blinded the giant.
However, Orion, was informed by an oracle that he could recover his eyesight if he exposed his eyes to the rays of the rising sun. Helped by Hefestos, Orion complied with the instructions and recovered his eyesight.

​​​​​​​​​​MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT

The NRP Orion is the second of four fast patrol boats, designed to inspect and control fishing activities as well as tasks of public interest.

Since its commissioning, it has been employed in several missions within the scope of security and State authority in the maritime areas under National Jurisdiction.

Through established protocols and agreements, it made regular cruises with elements of the Serviço Nacional de Bombeiros, and Guarda Nacional Republicana military.

On February 27th, 2004, it concluded a refit period at the Arsenal do Alfeite shipyard, which included the placement of two more fuel tanks, increasing its range.​​​​
