NRP MONDEGO

TEJO CLASS

HERALDIC PENNANT

The stripes wavy Azure-Argent symbolize the river, this being the reason for choosing this pattern for the pennants of the Tejo class. Gules symbolizes bravery, magnanimity, and victory.
The lion Or with dragon wings results from the syntheses of the animals portrayed in the Coat of Arms of Coimbra, the main city bathed by the Mondego River.

PATRON

The Mondego River has a total length of 234 kilometers. Its source is located at Serra da Estrela, in Gouveia municipality, Corgo das Mós (or “Mondeguinho”) at an altitude of 1425 meters. In its source, it crosses Serra da Estrela, from southwest to northeast, in the Gouveia and Guarda municipalities. Close to that city, next to Vila Cortês do Mondego, it comes to an altitude below 450 meters. At that point, it inflects its course, first to northwest, and later, already in Celorico da Beira, to southwest. Here it begins its medium course, along the Beirão plateau.
