PatronAlthough having been elevated to city by the end of the XIX century, the origins of Figueira da Foz go back to the pre-historic. Its privileged and strategic location on the banks of a rich estuary and extensive beaches led throughout history to the settlement of numerous civilizations that dedicated themselves essentially to commerce and fishing.
In the beginning of the XIX century, the development of naval construction, the increase of port traffic motivated by the merchant traffic of Aveiro due to port silting, and the increase of bathers and vacationers, led to a quick growth of inhabitants (it almost doubled the population). The progress was such that by September 20th, 1882 the town was elevated to the category of city, during the rule of D. Luis I.
