Patron
Viana do Castelo, a city since 1848 and a small town since 1258, had its origins in an agro-fishing agglomerate on the left bank of the Lima River´s mouth, and a descendant of towns from surrounding hills, namely Santa Luzia, where the ruins of a castro are preserved. Pero do Campo Tourinho was the Capitan of Porto Seguro, and it was by the epic resistance to the troops of Patuleia that the Queen D.Maria II elevated, by royal letter, Viana to city on January 20th, 1848, affecting to it the name of the most symbolic monument of its past and its value. Therefore, Viana of Lima River´s mouth was henceforth called Viana do Castelo.
