NRP António Enes
João Coutinho Class

The António Enes corvette is part of a series of six ships that make up the class João Coutinho, having been built at the Bazan shipyards in San Fernando, Cadiz, Spain. It was commissioned on June 18th, 1971.
Coat of ArmsArgent, eagle displayed Purpure. It holds in its claws the coat of arms of the city of António Enes. Coronet Or lined in Gules. Banderole wavy Argent and the Motto “NRP António Enes” in dark capital letters and elzevir font.
PatronAntónio Enes was born in Lisbon on August 15th, 1848. He excelled socially by being an illustrious politician, writer and connoisseur of colonial affairs. He studied in the college of the Lazarist priests, and after completing high school, he took a Superior Course of Letters, from which he graduated with distinction. In 1890, after the English Ultimatum, António Enes was in charge of the Navy and Overseas affairs. In 1891, he was appointed Regal Commissioner in Mozambique, where he gave evidence of great knowledge and competence, leaving his name linked to notable works in that province. He was the organizer of the Expedition of Mouzinho de Albuquerque, and later, in 1896, appointed minister of Portugal in Brazil. He also presided over the Committee that directed the work of the fifth Press Conference in Lisbon, in 1898. He passed away in Queluz, on August 6th, 1901.

​MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT​

A ship designed to carry out mainly missions of public interest in the area of safety and state authority at sea. It has represented national interests in various scenarios, namely Mozambique, Angola, Guinea and Cape Verde. Its main mission is surveillance, maritime search and rescue and supervision of maritime areas under national jurisdiction. It has participated in several national and international exercises and also training cruises of Naval Academy Cadets.​
