NRP João Roby
Baptista de Andrade Class

The corvette João Roby was built at the Factoria de Cartagena shipyards, being the second ship of the Baptista de Andrade class, which consisted of four units. It was commissioned on March 18th, 1975, being currently the only ship from the class still on duty.
Coat of ArmsDivided in two, dexter Gules with five axes Argent, and sinister Gules with an open tower Argent, enlightened in Sable, accompanied by five fleurs de lis Argent. Coronet Or lined in Gules. Banderole wavy Argent, and the Motto “NRP João Roby” in dark capital letters and elzevir font.
PatronJoão Borges de Faria Machado Pinto Roby de Miranda Pereira was born at the Solar de Infias, in Braga, on December 30th 1875. He attended high school in Liceu de Braga and later in the Colégio da Nossa Senhora da Glória in Oporto, after which he entered the Polytechnic School. On November 7th, 1980, being only 14 years old, he was admitted in the Naval Academy as a 2nd class Midshipman.

​A "corvette" type light oceanic escort vessel mainly performs missions of public interest within the scope of security and State authority at sea.

It was built in Spain at the Cartagena shipyards on entirely national construction plans.

Corvette type vessels currently perform maritime safety and safeguarding of human life at sea missions. They conduct maritime search and rescue missions in a large maritime area, patrol and surveillance in the maritime area under national jurisdiction, Economic Exclusive Zone, Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, protection and inspection of fishing and its resources, execution of relief actions and assistance in situations of calamity or accident, in collaboration with the National Fire and Rescue Service. They also participate in national and international exercises, joint and combined missions and pollution control exercises.​
