NRP Andromeda was commissioned by the Portuguese Navy on July 3rd, 1987. The hydrographic vessels of the Andromeda class were designed for research activities in estuaries and coastal areas. Within the scope of scientific military capability, the ship is a versatile and efficient platform.

The Heraldic Pennant of NRP Andromeda represents a bust Or of a princess enveloped by shackles Or as an allusion to Andromeda. The Vert symbolizes the sea connecting the ship with its mission and the highlights Or symbolize the importance of the mission.

Patron

In the Greek mythology, Andromeda was a princess of Ethiopia offered in sacrifice by her people to a sea monster. She was saved by Perseus, who killed the monster and took her as his wife. In her honor, Andromeda is also the name of a northern hemisphere constellation located south of Cassiopeia.

The Hydrographic Survey Vessel Andromeda supports several projects of the Hydrographic Institute, with special interest in the areas of Hydrography, Oceanography, Marine Geology, Chemical and Marine Environment Pollution. The versatility of these ships allows for its use in several areas and scenarios, allowing its availability to other organisms with interest in the domain of sea sciences.
