MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT
The
hydrographic survey vessel Auriga operates within the domain of the sciences of
the sea in estuaries and coastal areas. Of relevance is its capacity to lodge
researchers and specialized technicians equipped with modern hydrographic,
oceanography and marine geology systems. It has a wet laboratory, a 30m2 work
area on the rear deck, the capability of performing hydrographic surveys for
the description of the sea bottom, as well as the geophysical surveys for the
mapping of the marine subsoil, among other capabilities. Since its launch, NRP
Auriga has participated in several types of military missions, research,
development and support of the National and International Scientific Community.
Of special relevance are the mission of locating the fishing vessel Bolama,
sunk when reaching the Tejo barrier in 1992, and the study of the dynamic
characterization of the submarine cannon of Nazareth, in the range of European
Union Hotspot Ecosystem Research project on The Margins of European Seas
(HERMES), initiated in 2005 and which involved 36 entities of 15 countries.
