“NRP D. Carlos I” was built in the Unites States of America by Tacoma Boat Company, and launched on January 30th, 1989, with the name “USNS AUDACIOUS”. It served on the US Navy until 1995 and was transferred to the Portuguese Navy in December of 1996. This ship serves as an hydrographic and oceanographic vessel.

PatronKing D. Carlos I, ruler of Portugal between 1889 and 1908, was a prominent researcher and man of science connected to the sea. Under his guidance, the modern Portuguese oceanographic bases were set. His oceanographic studies were recognized worldwide, leaving an important written work as a result of his investigations.

​​MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT

It was built as an anti-submarine surveillance ship, and while in service to the US Navy, its mission consisted on the recovery and transmission of acoustic information using a system of towed passive sensors.

Decommissioned in 1995, it was transferred on December 9th, 1996 to the Portuguese Navy, where it was commissioned on February 28th, 1997. After arriving in Portugal, it was modified by Arsenal do Alfeite for its current functions as a hydrographic and oceanographic ship. It suffered two new adaptations between 2001/04 and 2008/10.

The NRP D.Carlos I is a hydrographic vessel with the main task of supporting the performance of research activities and technological development related to sciences and techniques of the sea, keeping in mind their application in military naval operations, especially in the field of hydrography, hydrographic cartography, navigation security, and the oceanographic and marine environment defense.
