MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT
It was
built as an anti-submarine surveillance ship, and while in service to the US
Navy, its mission consisted on the recovery and transmission of acoustic
information using a system of towed passive sensors.
Decommissioned
in 1995, it was transferred on December 9th, 1996 to the Portuguese
Navy, where it was commissioned on February 28th, 1997. After
arriving in Portugal, it was modified by Arsenal do Alfeite for its current
functions as a hydrographic and oceanographic ship. It suffered two new
adaptations between 2001/04 and 2008/10.
The NRP
D.Carlos I is a hydrographic vessel with the main task of supporting the
performance of research activities and technological development related to
sciences and techniques of the sea, keeping in mind their application in
military naval operations, especially in the field of hydrography, hydrographic
cartography, navigation security, and the oceanographic and marine environment
defense.
