PATRON

The name Polar comes from the Polar star, so named due to the fact of remaining fixed in a position coincident with the projection of the Earth´s axis. It is used in navigation as a referential for guidance, by indicating the North cardinal point. It also plays an important part in astronomical navigation, namely in determining the latitude.

MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT

School ship Polar is a replica of the famous yacht America, which crossed the Atlantic to win the 100 Guinea Cup in 1851, giving its name to the world´s most coveted trophy.

In 1983 it was acquired by “Windjammer fur Hamburg" to be delivered to the Navy as compensation for the yielding of “Sagres I".

After a long refitting period Polar performed its first mission on April of 1985, replacing the schooner Sirius (1876), former royal yacht which King D. Luís had offered to Queen D. Maria Pia, in the task of training the Naval School cadets. Onboard Polar, the cadets and midshipmen of the Naval Academy have the possibility of putting in practice the knowledge acquired, specifically in the fields of navigation, seamanship and adapting to life at sea.
