The main mission of sailboats is to provide to the younger generations a larger and deeper contact with life at sea. They are also tasked with the representation of the Navy and country as direct support to the State´s diplomatic action. Portugal has kept the tradition of using large sailboats as school ships and sea training ships, as complement to the theoretical training ministered to the future Navy officers at the Naval Academy, as well as providing contact with life at sea to the civilian society.
