NTM Creoula

CREOULA CLASS

Serving Portugal since 1937, NTM Creoula was built at Lisbon in the record time of 62 work days, being transferred to the Navy in 1987 as a Sea Training Ship and having taken aboard over 16,000 youngsters since then.

COAT OF ARMS

Shield Azure with two cod fish Argent below two ropes forming a straight knot. Coronet Or lined in Gules. Banderole Argent, with a waving pattern, with the Motto “NTM CREOULA” in black capital letters and elzevir font.
The cods allude to the historical past of the ship as a cod fishing ship, and the straight knot translates the spirit of assistance, friendship and camaraderie which the youngsters developed while aboard the NTM Creoula, as well as the instruction on seamanship and the art of knot making.

​​​​​​​MISSION AND EMPLOYMENT

Creoula is a 4 mast lugger, built in 1937 at the CUF shipyards in Lisbon, in the record time of 62 work days. The ship was launched on the 10th of May. Up to 1973 it performed 37 cod fishing campaigns in Newfoundland and Greenland. In 1987, the ship was integrated into the Portuguese Navy with the status of Sea Training Ship, with the primary mission of offering youngsters contact with the sea. Creoula is likewise used in missions to spread the image of the country, it´s culture and its traditions.
