The CHENS will board OPV Viana
do Castelo Class, which will give them
the opportunity to get familiar with
this vessel built in Portugal. While on
board they will observe the operation
of unmanned vehicles, a project that
is being developed by the Portuguese
          Navy in partnership with national
          universities and industries. The Navy
Museum will be the setting for the
formal dinner which will close the
                          st
          programme for the 1 day.
On the following day, the plenary
session will take place, at the Myriad
Hotel, in Lisbon. The theme of the
          session is Unmanned Systems Role
in Future Naval Operations. The best
          of Portugal’s operational experimen-
tation in search of the most efficient
          solutions to introduce unmanned sys-
tems in support of naval operations
will be presented. A number of dis-
          tinguished national and international
          scholars will address the vulnerability
of the unmanned vehicles to cyber-attacks. Drone flight operations off Troia naval pier.
Before the ceremony of the handover of the Chairmanship to
Malta, the results of the work of the two WS will be presented.
The Portuguese Navy led the WS on Autonomous Vehicles Vul-
nerabilities to Cyberattacks, which reinforces the importance of
the cyberspace within the theme of using unmanned vehicles in
naval operations, considering the vulnerability of the systems to
cyber-attacks where software and monitoring networks play a
key role. The Turkish Navy has developed the WS on Change in
the Conduct of Naval Operations – in which way unmanned sys-
tems can be integrated, organizing a workshop, which was also
open to Universities and industries of the CHENS’ countries.
ESYO – EUROPEAN SEMINAR FOR YOUNG
          OFFICERS

In addition to the CHENS forum, the European Seminar for
Young Officers (ESYO) for junior officers of CHENS member navies
is held annually. This Seminar explores topical subjects of naval
interest and at the same time generates mutual understanding
between the individual participants. The Portuguese Navy will
be responsible for organizing the ESYO in 2020. The Seminar
will take place from 29 June to 3 July 2020 and will be hosted
by the Portuguese Naval Academy in the year of the 500th anni-
versary of the Fernão de Magalhães/Elcano circumnavigation.
This event, under the same topic of the 2019 CHENS Conference,
Unmanned Systems Role in Future Naval Operations, is open to Foto SAJ ETC Silva Parracho
